The Daughters of Bluegrass was an idea conceived by Lorraine Jordan of the Carolina Road Band and Gena Britt, who was at the time
traveling with Carolina Road. Their thoughts were there were so many great women pickers and singers in bluegrass why not bring them all together for a recording project showing those talents. The years and experience of these eighteen performers represent many varied and great styles. From the traditional singing and playing of Lorraine Jordan and Dale Ann Bradley to the contemporary styles of Gena Britt and Julie Elkins, there is something for everyone on this project.

Dixie Hall a songwriter on the album says, “Go Listen - it’s all there and anyone who doesn’t ‘get it’ should’ve asked Jimmy Martin or John Duffey. Listen and form your own opinion.” Audiences got that chance in February when The Daughters of Bluegrass showcased songs from the album at a performance at the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America's convention in Nashville.

18 Million On Bluegrass Band Wagon
5/1/2006

According to the latest data from Simmons Research polling, 17,977,000 (8.5% of the total U.S. adult population) cited bluegrass as the musical genre they liked most, bought or downloaded in 2005.

There were 38 types of music included in the survey, with the list topped by ‘60s and ‘70s pop, traditional and mainstream country. The numbers for bluegrass came in ahead of genres many might have considered more popular.

Of those indicating a preference for bluegrass, 52% were age 25-54, they were more likely to be male (53%) and "listening to music" was listed as their number one leisure time activity. More than a third graduated from college, while 8 out of 10 own their home. Most are married and almost 1 in 5 reports an income of $100,000 or more.

The Simmons study also garners insight into a vast array of consumer habits and media usage. For example, those who like bluegrass most also are 47% more likely to already have Sirius Satellite Radio, (though 20% less likely to have XM), and are 10% more likely to listen to terrestrial radio on weekends (to catch those weekend bluegrass shows?).

IBMA subscribes to the data from Simmons as a member service and also to support efforts to open new doors for bluegrass with broadcasters, event producers, retailers, the media and the corporate world. Because the survey is much broader than the data on music preferences, it can be a valuable tool in understanding consumers and connecting them with purchases of goods and services.

Simmons is one of the country's most respected research bureaus and all information in this study was based on polling of over 24,000 U.S. adults between January - September, 2005. This latest study added options on what type of music consumers "liked most" to the questionnaire.
